H.XO.P.E. realizes that finding work is one of the biggest obstacles for individuals released from prison.  Studies tracking employment rates for xoffenders  during the year following their release typically find that fewer than half are employed at any point. Finding employment is critical to the success of recidivism reduction or any re-integration plan, as statistics show that within a five year period half  of those inmates released who are not a productive member of society will be back in prison.
As a non-profit organization, H.XO.P.E.'s vision is:

"To be a reliable partner in reducing recidivism by  assisting  xoffenders in obtaining employment opportunities".

In pursuit of our vision,  H.XO.P.E. will work with inmates, prison staff, government/non-profit organization, religious/public support services and business owners. Our role with inmates is to emphasis the importance for them to voluntarily enroll in pre and post release activities (Value Development Programs -VDP) that will aid in H.XO.P.E.'s ability to find them employment.

Results of a three-year study indicated that when offenders are involved in an effective VDP, which include prison ministry, the percentage of those rearrested drops dramatically. Research has also indicated that if an inmate attends regular religious classes during incarceration, that person is 67% less likely to return to prison than those who did not.

The initiative and proactiveness of an inmate to enroll and successfully complete VDP demonstrates their desire, commitment and hope to become  a productive member of the community and avoid recidivism.  H.XO.P.E. wishes to be apart of that success.

Value Development Programs (VDP)

VDP is an array of pre and post release programs and activities that are designed to help inmates become a productive and successful member of society through academic preparation, transitional readiness services and post-release support services. Such programs may include:

Social/Behavior Programs
Decision Making Skills
Religious Activities
Academic/Vocational/Occupational Programs
Alcohol/Drug Rehabilitation
Family and Life management
Post Release Mentoring

The aim of these programs are many, a few key objectives are listed below:

  • To identify and remove factors associated with criminal behavior
  • To understand and value the importance of spirituality
  • To develop skills for independent and community living
  • To develop competencies for employment opportunities and stability

The over-arching goal of any VDP is to improve the mental, emotional, social, spiritual, educational and behavioral aspects of the inmate, which collectively  improves life in prison,   help the xoffenders make a successful reintegration into the community and, most importantly, decrease the likelihood of recidivism.
